Frequently Asked Questions

What is Professional Counseling?

Professional counselors work with individuals, families, groups and organizations. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. Through counseling you examine the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are causing difficulties in your life. You learn effective ways to deal with your problems by building upon personal strengths. A professional counselor will encourage your personal growth and development in ways that foster your interest and welfare.

What types of counseling do you provide?

Couple-counseling, Individual Therapy, Family Therapy, Food Disorders, Self Esteem issues, Gender issues, Sexual Difficulties, Treatment for Depression and Bipolar Diseases, Raising children, Teenage challenges, Age Related Issues, Cross Cultural Issues, and others.

Are you available as a speaker for seminars and retreats?

Yes, we do speak at Seminars. Topics may be arranged for your specific target group.
We also organize Couple Seminars in Thailand.
Please call our office (+66-2279-8503) or use our Contact page to request more information.

How long does counseling take?

Counseling varies in length depending on past history and present symptoms. This makes predicting length of treatment very difficult.  Under ideal circumstances, both you and your therapist will agree when treatment has been completed. At the initial appointment, you will establish goals regarding how you would like to use your time. These goals will serve as a guide to make your sessions productive and time-limited. Counseling is ended when the problem that you pursued counseling for becomes more manageable or is resolved.

Is everything I say confidential?

All members of NCS subscribe to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice which require counselors to protect the confidentiality of their communications with clients.  As a client, you are guaranteed the protection of confidentiality within the boundaries of the client/counselor relationship. Any disclosure will be made with your full written, informed consent and will be limited to a specific period of time. The only limitations to confidentiality occur when a counselor feels that there is clear and imminent danger to you or to others, or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be disclosed, such as in a court case. Whenever possible, you will be informed before confidential information is revealed.

Do you also provide Christian Counseling?

NCS offers counseling to people of all beliefs.  We believe the challenges of life can best be met by considering the emotional, physical, social, and spiritual aspects of our lives.  Counseling sessions are based on academic study, clinical experience, and personal commitment and will offer a holistic approach to your personal difficulties. For individuals who desire that the Bible be a guide and authority for the principles and direction of the counseling process, NCS will provide this service by offering the help of a dedicated Christian counselor.

What is your approach in working with children/adolescents?

In working with children or adolescents, guardians or family will be incorporated as appropriate.  NCS finds it essential to include parents in the process to facilitate communication and understanding between them and their children.  Children and adolescents will be seen one-on-one to encourage their individual thought and emotion/expression.  Individual sessions are offered to parents for their own support, understanding, and guidance.  The goal is to encourage and facilitate joint appointments as it seems fitting for each family.

I don’t see how talking about my problems will help me.  What is the purpose of counseling?

NCS Counseling Service provides more than just a place to vent thoughts or feelings. The goal is not solely to hear a professional share advice. By meeting with a counseling professional, you may benefit from sharing inner struggles, to gain a new perspective or reframe distorted thoughts or beliefs.  The counseling process also offers a venue for improving personal insight to self, life, emotions, and behaviors.  Finally, it can be educational and assist an individual in identifying practical tools to improve his/her quality of life.  The established goals between the client and therapist will guide this process to encourage productive sessions.  The goal of counseling is for the client and/or the family to come to a greater awareness through the process itself rather than the counseling professional.

How do I know if I could benefit from counseling?

Life is demanding.  The struggles you may be experiencing could range from feelings of worthlessness, fatigue, depression, or anxiety to dissatisfaction with family, relationships, work, or self.  Our counselors are trained and experienced in a wide variety of issues.  Beginning with a thorough assessment of your present problem, family background, social functioning and spiritual resources, counseling can help you pinpoint the reasons, set goals for attacking the problem and help you achieve your goals.  We are sensitive to the difficulty in seeking outside help. Consider setting an appointment to see if this could help you with your current situation.

Is there someone in your office who can prescribe medications?

No, but we work with a local psychiatrist to prescribe and oversee the use of medications when they are needed.  A referral to his or her office can easily be made. Our office provides support and intervention through therapeutic services.
